UHMWPE Ultra-High Molecular Weight Poly Ethylene has the greatest sliding wear resistance and notched impact strength of any known commercial plastic. In molded parts, it retains its toughness at temperatures well below those of liquid nitrogen -196°C (-231°F) has a highly self-lubricating, nonstick, nonporous surface and is extremely stress-crack-resistant. Typical molecular weight of UHMWPE is 4.5 million to 6 million g/mol and used for standard applications whereas for most demanding applications; the offered grades are up to molecular weight more than 10 million g/mol. Most of its mechanical, thermal and physical properties are constant throughout its molecular-weight range, although abrasion resistance tends to improve and impact strength tends to drop as molecular weight rises. |
UHMWPE Material |
| UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Poly Ethylene) is a versatile, high performing material that stands up to demanding applications in many industries. It is often chosen for wear and sliding surface for bulk materials and ores, where it provides a low friction surface that resists wear and chemicals. These properties are also important on equipment for lining industry, paper-making, chemical, textile, and water and wastewater treatment facilities. Many fillers and additives can modify UHMWPE’s physical, thermal, electrical, appearance and other characteristics, although they tend to reduce the abrasion resistance and notched impact strength. Adhesives and solvent do not work well with it because surfaces are so chemically inert. Some excellent uses are as conveyor wear strips, chain guides, chute and hopper linings, bush & bearings and truck bed liners. Its non-stick, nonporous, low-wear qualities are also important in maintaining cleanliness in food, beverage and pharmaceutical facilities. Chopping boards & Butcher blocks are most preferred in UHMWPE due to easy absorption of knife strike thus not chipping of material (due to its polymer structure, which contains linear chains 10 to 20 times longer than those in melt-processable high-density PE), resistance to the growth of bacteria, cleaning with chlorine and not swell of water. UHMWPE’s ability to retain its mechanical properties to near absolute zero makes it ideal for winter sports equipment and cryogenic applications. Marine & Dock Fenders are the high end applications due to UHMWPE’s high noise reduction and shock absorption features. Both PE-HMW and PE-UHMW are also available as reprocessed materials, although it must be noted that the respective physical properties are slightly reduced. Many applications are in ideal replacement to PTFE (Teflon), due to its low coefficient of friction & non-stick properties. Being a good insulator, most anti-static applications can be utilized and UV-stabilized grades are offered for outdoor applications with no physical changes with environment. Features / Benefits
